Evidence brief
The transferable rule is about protected information and verification, not a blanket ban on AI.
What is known
The Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre reported that fabricated judgments had been submitted in proceedings and that a lawyer was found in contempt. It later issued Practice Direction No. 1 of 2026 and accompanying guidance.
The guidance prohibits entering confidential, privileged or otherwise protected material into publicly accessible AI systems. It also makes the legal representative responsible for verifying authorities and submissions. Prior disclosure of AI use is not automatically required unless the court directs it.
What is unknown
The announcement does not name the system used or publish enough detail to reconstruct the failure. It does not show how other Qatari courts, Iraqi courts or professional regulators would treat the same conduct.
What transfers
Classify the material before choosing a tool. Do not place client, witness, case-strategy or privileged information in a public assistant. Check every citation in the official reporter or issuing institution, and keep a short internal record of what the system helped produce and who approved it.
Workshop question
Which information handled by your legal team is never safe to paste into a public AI tool, even after removing names?
Tools the sources name
The sources name no tool for this case. We have not guessed one, and neither should anyone repeating the story.
What we do not claim
Everything above is limited by what its sources actually prove. This is the part they do not.
This is a practice direction for legal representatives before one court, not national law in Qatar or evidence of Iraqi court practice. The official announcement does not identify the lawyer or AI product. Prior disclosure is not mandatory unless the court requires it.
