What may go into it: Only after identifying details are removed

Remove names, contact details, exact addresses and anything else that identifies a person before you paste. If the job cannot be done once those are gone, use a controlled route instead.

Fill in the blanks

Type into each box. The prompt on this page fills itself in as you type, and the highlighted parts show where your words land. Nothing you type here leaves your phone or computer until you copy the prompt or open a tool with it.

The prompt

Answer in [ANSWER LANGUAGE], even if the material below is in another language.

Write the budget narrative for the budget lines below. Use only what is on those lines.

Rules:
1. Every sentence must be traceable to one budget line. Name the line at the start of the sentence.
2. Never change a figure. Do not round it, correct it, convert a currency or calculate a total I did not give you. Copy every figure exactly as I wrote it.
3. Where a line needs a justification I have not given you, write [WHY THIS LINE] and carry on. Never invent a reason, a rate, a quantity or a supplier.
4. Do not add a line I did not give you, and do not merge two lines into one sentence.
5. Plain language, short sentences. One short paragraph per line.

Give me, in this order:
A. The narrative, in the order the lines appear, one paragraph per line.
B. A list of every [WHY THIS LINE] you wrote, with the line it belongs to, so I can fill them in.
C. Any figure that looks inconsistent with another figure I gave you, quoted as I wrote it. Do not correct it.

The budget lines:
[PASTE THE BUDGET LINES]

The donor's own wording for this section, if the template gives one:
[PASTE THE TEMPLATE INSTRUCTION OR WRITE "none"]

Opens a new chat in that tool with this prompt already typed in. Fill in every box first, and read the line at the top about what may go into it.

25 minutes · Gives you short sections · Works on a phone · How much to paste at once: Paste at most 20 budget lines at a time. If the narrative stops before your last line, or section B is missing, the answer was cut off, so send the rest of the lines in a second message.

Read the answer against the checks below before you use it in anything that leaves your organisation.

What to fill in

  • Write the language you need the narrative in, for example Arabic, Kurdish or English, into [ANSWER LANGUAGE].
  • Paste the lines into [PASTE THE BUDGET LINES] exactly as they stand in your budget file, with no personal names.
  • Fill [PASTE THE TEMPLATE INSTRUCTION OR WRITE "none"] from the donor's own template.

Before you trust the answer

  1. Compare every figure in the narrative against your budget lines, digit by digit. One changed figure spoils the whole document.
  2. Fill in every [WHY THIS LINE] yourself before the narrative goes to the donor.
  3. Delete any sentence that describes an activity or a supplier that appears on no line.

When it goes wrong

It will write a smooth justification for a line you never explained, complete with an invented daily rate, instead of leaving [WHY THIS LINE].
