Prompts
Turn one finding into a press release and three posts
Writes the release and the posts around one figure you supply, keeps the figure exactly as given, and marks every sentence that needs sign-off.
What may go into it: Public or invented material only
The prompt
Answer in [ANSWER LANGUAGE], even if the material below is in another language. Write a press release and three social posts about the finding below. Use only what I give you. The finding, in one sentence: [WRITE IT] The number, exactly as it must appear: [WRITE IT, WITH ITS UNIT AND ITS PERIOD] Where the number comes from: [OUR REPORT, ITS DATE, ITS PAGE] The quote, and the role of the person who said it: [PASTE THE QUOTE AND THE ROLE] What we are asking for: [THE ONE ACTION YOU WANT] What we have not established: [WHATEVER OUR MATERIAL DOES NOT PROVE] Rules: 1. Never change the number, its unit or its period. Do not round it, do not convert it, do not write it as a word. 2. Copy the digits as I typed them, whether they are ١٢٣ or 123. 3. Do not add a cause. If we did not establish why, do not explain why. 4. No adjectives that overstate: unprecedented, shocking, historic. 5. Keep the quote word for word. 6. If a detail is missing, write [MISSING] in the draft. Do not fill it in yourself. Give me, in this order: A. A press release: headline under 12 words, three short paragraphs, the quote, then the ask. B. Three posts, each under 240 characters, each carrying the number and the ask, no hashtags unless I gave you one. C. Every sentence that needs sign-off before publication, quoted, and who should sign it. D. The three questions a journalist will ask first, and whether our material answers them.

20 minutes · Gives you short sections · Works on a phone · How much to paste at once: This prompt is short, so send it in one message with the six lines filled in. If the third post is missing, or a post ends mid sentence, ask for the missing post alone rather than sending the whole prompt again.
Read the answer against the checks below before you use it in anything that leaves your organisation.
What to fill in
- [ANSWER LANGUAGE]: the release and the posts come back in that language. Ask for a second language in a separate prompt.
- The number with its unit and its period, exactly as it must appear in print, and where it comes from.
- The quote word for word, and the role of the speaker rather than the name if the name is not yet cleared.
- [WHATEVER OUR MATERIAL DOES NOT PROVE], so the draft cannot claim it.
Before you trust the answer
- Check the number in sections A and B against your own report, digit by digit. This is the single most common published error.
- Read section D before you send anything. If your material does not answer those questions, the release is early.
- Nothing goes out until the sentences in section C are signed off.
When it goes wrong
It will round your number or move it to a neater period, so a figure for six months goes out as a figure for the year.
